Element Hydra 590 WHP! What it takes

So what does it take to make about 600 whp? Not to long ago Alex M. installed an Element Hydra EMS on his fully built STI and headed to Maryland to have me tune his project. All forged internals, head work, Jun cams, fuel rails with -10 AN lines pumped from a surge tank through and a Aeromotive pump. When he told me he had 785 cc injectors I looked at him like he was crazy and told him that wasn’t going to cut it but moved on none the less.

At around 22 psi on pump fuel the car put out 455 whp at an AFR of 11.2 but with the 785cc injectors were running static:

We obviously stopped tuning as larger injectors were a must, not only for more power but also for reliability. Intake air temps were at 46C which can easily fall to -20C in his home town so there’s no way with the 785cc injectors the AFR would hold constant with such a drastic temperature change.

Two weeks later we’re back on the dyno but this time with 1000cc injectors. We readjusted the fuel mapping to compensate for the larger injectors and headed to the dyno. Even with 1000cc injectors the idle was beautiful with the Hydra. Since Alex was happy with his pump gas numbers we decided to move straight to race gas and see what this car was capable of. First off guys don’t waste your money on anything but VP C16 if you are looking for maximum reliable power. Fast forward through our cheap 118 octane detonation experiment and let’s move on to the C16 runs.

After many pulls the car was absolutely maxed out on the GT35R running a 1.06 AR exhaust at 590 whp. No matter what we tried the car was not capable of producing more than about 27-28 psi at this power level. It was also showing signs of being pushed too far and I had to richen up the AFR slightly and really limit the ignition timing which is rare on VP C16. Take a look at the data:

You can see that around 27-28 psi running an approximate AFR of 12.5:1 the 1000cc injectors peaked at 89.6 %. So as you can see it takes a lot of fuel to make 600 whp. Also who would have thought at GT35R would be too small. LOL!
